I joined SBC in 2006 to develop our employee volunteering programmes. Having spent most of my career working for blue chip companies I had seen the scale of the power and influence that business holds. As a life long volunteer I had seen things at home and around the world which many of my colleagues had not, I struggled to reconcile my personal values with those that were encouraged at work, and I could see that many others felt the same.

Companies that support and encourage volunteering are more successful businesses. They work together better and know their customers and labor market better. They maintain morale and retain staff, and they attract the best new recruits. My role is to help member companies to develop and make the most of the opportunities that supporting volunteering can deliver.

The best part of my role is seeing a new volunteer discover a new side of life, and to start thinking differently about their view of the world. We can all make a small difference, and that’s is all that is needed, if we all do it. Business volunteers bring skills and impacts which can not be achieved in any other way.
