Mentoring

npartners 1.jpg What is Mentoring?

Mentoring a young person can be one of the most rewarding ways to develop your skills.

A mentoring partnership combines staff development with helping to support, encourage and equip young people with the skills to compete in the employment market.

A member of staff is paired up with a young person and the aim of the mentor programme is to build the young person’s confidence and support them into a positive work or training destination.

How will your staff benefit from participating in the programme?

Many employees are involved in this sort of activity because it helps to:
  • Boost their confidence, morale and job satisfaction
  • Develop their communication skills
  • Develop influencing skills
  • Strengthen their feedback skills
  • Understand people, their values and different perspectives

What will you need to do?

Each mentor will need to make sure that they can commit to 1 hour a month for one year.

This excludes the summer months (June – August). There will also be some training and on–going development if you require.

What support is available to you?

You will be provided with:
  • Mentoring training with a group of other mentors
  • A mentor manual with exercises
  • Match you with a local school

quotation marks.jpgI have been involved with Deloitte's school mentoring initiative for around three years now, and hve mentored two young lads at Portobello High School during that time. It has been an enourmously enjoyable, as well as rewarding experience. The biggest thing that I have learnt is coaching skills - it's all about developing a rapport, teasing things out of them, getting to the root of any problems and then giving advice. I also get feedback from a young person that I would never get in normal work situationquotation marks2.jpgDavid Craig, Consultant, Deloitte
