In the East of Scotland region, Royal Mail has worked in partnership with ENABLE Scotland to provide a number of work placement and job opportunities for people with learning disabilities, and other excluded groups.

The John Lewis Partnership is a leading UK retailer. They work with Scottish Business in the Community in Glasgow on a mentoring programme with young people who require support to build confidence and gain a direction in their life.

KPMG (Glasgow) takes part in a programme called Number Partners. Numbers Partners is a business volunteering scheme supporting pupils in schools with numeracy and social skills. It provides KPMG partners with an opportunity to use their skills in a different setting.

Marks & Spencer, one of Britain’s largest retailers, is involved in a number of initiatives as part of the employability agenda. Marks & Spencer’s recently opened a store at Silverburn, Glasgow and the need to recruit a large number of staff provided an opportunity to work with local employability partner agencies.

Nairns Oatcakes owns and operates a factory on the edge of Craigmillar in south Edinburgh. Approximately 115 staff are employed at Nairns, with food production the core focus of the business. Nairns has engaged with a number of intermediaries in order to provide placement opportunities for disadvantaged people.

ScottishPower Learning was established in 1996 and is focused on providing opportunities to improve the employability of young people. During this time over 15,000 young people have been directly trained and developed by ScottishPower Learning.

Standard Life has a multifaceted Corporate Community Investment programme which includes various education projects that bring together staff and young people.

The company is involved in a number of activities under the ‘investing in the community’ strand of its Corporate Responsibility strategy. Since 1996 it has worked with a number of partner agencies to provide paid work placements (based on a six months contract) to people with a history of homelessness. Since 2002 a similar model has been used to offer placements to disabled job seekers.

Johnson & Johnson are involved with The Healthcare Academy of a local secondary school in West Lothian. The Healthcare Academy was set up to support pupils who do not thrive as well as they could under the traditional curriculum. Johnson & Johnson staff become involved in helping to make maths and sciences ‘come alive’ for pupils by integrating them into healthcare concepts.
