Engaging Employers in the Business
The aspiration for the Curriculum for Excellence is to enable all children and young people to become successful learners, confident individuals, responsible citizens and effective contributors to both society and the workplace. The purpose of the curriculum is to provide the structure and support in learning that will enable all children and young people to develop these four capacities.

Scottish education is changing now to ensure our children and young people have the knowledge and skills they need for learning, and for their future life and work. Curriculum for Excellence is intended to provide more choices and more chances for all young people.
Engaging Employers is one of six interrelated themes in the second phase of the Scottish Government’s strategy Determined to Succeed. It involves education and the business community working closely together to give pupils positive attitudes to work and life.
Edinburgh Schools Programme
Will provide a range of opportunities for Primary 7 pupils to learn in meaningful work related contexts. An action packed workshop will bring the world of work to life in a fun, interactive programme. A range of employers, suited to the needs of each school community, will provide workshops covering a range of topics such as apprenticeships, production, marketing, Human Resources, and finance. Pupils learn about what these jobs mean as well as experiencing the role.
'I really enjoyed the workshop because I got a chance to find out about other people’s jobs. I have learned lots about the skills you will need for jobs. I now know that there is going to be a lot of work to put in for some jobs. I think it helps when we get shown people’s jobs because you get a clearer understanding' A Primary 7 pupil from Clermiston Primary School
This programme will assist P7 pupils to develop the following key skills which are essential for succeeding in the world of work:
- Teamwork
- Communication
- Problem solving
- Flexible approach
- Motivation
- Creative thinking skills
'I found the workshops fun and I learned more about the world of work. I have started to wonder more about what jobs I want but today I found out that there are so many jobs available, so I haven’t decided. I now know that my school work will help prepare me for the world of work. I really enjoyed today and I think it would be a good idea for you to do it with other years.' A Primary 7 pupil from Wardie Primary School, Edinburgh
The Business Engagement Cluster Programme
SBC is recruiting companies to become active within their school communities. Working through a business advisory group each cluster school (secondary school plus its feeder primaries) will agree an agenda of activities. Potential activities could cater for young people from P7 to S6.
