Quick Wins to Save you Energy

We know that businesses are different from one another, with different carbon reduction challenges and opportunities facing each business and sector. Below is a list of tips that are generic to most businesses, but can help cut energy usage in all businesses.

Reducing Heating and Energy

  • Ensure heating is at the right level (between 19 – 22 degrees Celsius)
  • Encourage staff to wear appropriate clothing for the season
  • Ensure heating and air conditioning are not on at the same time
  • Ensure the office is well insulated and draughts are blocked
  • Service heaters and airconditioning units annually and adjust for optimum efficiency
  • Install time switches on portable electric heaters and fans
  • Avoid simultaneous heating and cooling
  • Insulate all hot water tanks, boilers, valves and pipework unless they provide useful heat to occupied spaces
  • Reduce heating in areas that are warmed by the sun
  • Set thermostats between 19-20 degrees Celsius for heating, and between 23-24 degrees Celsius for cooling
  • Place thermostats away from draughts and direct sunlight and at a distance from any heating sources
  • Install zone controls to allow heating and cooling of different parts of the building
  • Set timers so heating only comes on when needed
  • Control heating using seven day timers
  • In summer, open windows to cool the space as a first option, and only close windows and use air conditioning if this was not enough
  • Instead of opening windows when it is too hot, turn down thermostats a little until a comfortable temperature is reached
  • Fit draughtstrips and seal up windows and doors that are no longer used
  • Fit thermostatic radiator valves (TRV’s) to radiators
