Pupil Mentoring

istock_3539481 students.jpgMentoring a young person can be one of the most rewarding volunteering experiences. A mentoring partnership combines staff development with helping to support, encourage and equip young people with the skills to compete in the employment market.For young people the benefits will depend on their individual needs but will include:

  • gaining an insight into the world of work
  • discussing the pros and cons of a particular career path;
  • easing the transition from school to work
  • advice and guidance on entrance qualifications, interviews, etc
  • raising pupil expectations and encourage life-long learning.

Training will consist of a   2 hour workshop covering:

  • What is mentoring
  • Role of a mentor
  • Models of mentoring
  • Skills and Qualities of Mentoring
  • Specific Skills e.g. listening, questioning, feeding back, etc.
  • Child Protection
  • Challenges
  • The Mentoring Relationship

Support provided:

  • SBC will administer the Disclosure Scotland application procedures;
  • ongoing participation will vary but on average it will be 1 hour every other week or as agreed. We ask for a minimum commitment of one school term.
  • SBC will ensure all the initial logistical arrangements are made
  • SBC will facilitate all initial in-school activities, arranging visits and liaising between the mentor and school.
  • Once the partnership between school and mentor has been set up and established, the mentor will have responsibility for liaising directly with the school in the event of changes such as visit dates or timings.
