Number & Reading Partners
Number and Reading Partners is a volunteering scheme that brings together business volunteers and schools, working collaboratively to improve standards in numeracy and literacy.
The specific aims are to:
- Support schools in raising achievement in numeracy & literacy.
- Enhance children’s confidence and motivation to learn.
- Give a positive insight into the world of employment.
Volunteers spend 1 hour per week at the school either playing numeracy based board games with pupils, or reading with pupils. SBC brief volunteers on working in primary schools, administer Disclosure Scotland checks, and broker the relationship with a school.
Benefits
- Children gain confidence and skills when it comes to their maths work and reading, and their work with an adult who isn’t a teacher boosts their attitude to learning.
- Volunteers report great personal satisfaction from their involvement in the scheme, as well as improved communication skills. Some even improve their maths skills!
- A company joining the scheme can expect their staff to develop a better attitude towards them as an employer. Volunteers feel good working for an organisation that ‘gives something back’. In some instances, joining Number Partners can lead to permanent links being forged with a local school.
- Schools value the extra support and benefits brought to the children.
