Highland Spring
Who
Highland Spring is the United Kingdom's leading supplier of bottled water. It produces still and sparkling water at its factory in Blackford, Perth and Kinross, Scotland. In 2008 Highland Spring was the highest-selling sparkling water in the UK and holds 2nd position in the UK still water market. They have 300 employees.
What
The company is concentrating on minimizing their environmental impact. They measure their carbon footprint annually and share their results.
In 2008 they installed an Air Recovery System to help reduce their annual energy usage. They are working hard to reduce the amount of packaging material they use. By making their plastic bottles lighter, they have reduced their annual PET (polyethylene terephthalate) usage by 110,000 kg.
With evolving technology they continually review their packaging and processes to see how other reductions can be made, including taking advantage of recycled packaging materials. In 2008 more than 15 million Highland Spring bottles were produced using 25% recycled PET. They expect this to rise to 50 million bottles in the next few years.
By continually reviewing how they package and distribute their product they have managed to reduce their annual usage of corrugated cardboard by 55,000kg and saved the equivalent of 25,000 road miles in transportation.
There are no pesticides, pollution, farming, agricultural spraying, building or habitation allowed anywhere in their catchment area.
Highland Spring supports charities and community groups, sponsors sports teams and promoting the benefits of healthy living.
Why
