COMMONWEALTH APPRENTICESHIP READINESS EVENTS
Over the last 12 months, Scottish Business in the Community (SBC) Glasgow and Glasgow’s Vocational Programme have been working closely on the Commonwealth Apprenticeship Initiative ensuring that young people (16 – 18 year olds), from all the schools in Glasgow and leaving school in 2009 have the necessary employability skills and are aware of the opportunities available to them including Modern Apprenticeship.
SBC encouraged and supported 27 businesses to get involved in a range of employability related activities during the months of March and April. These were aimed at raising awareness of the expectations of, and entry qualifications for, particular sectors. Over the year businesses provided more than 210 employees who contributed to preparing young people for entering employment by providing practical input on application completion and mock interviews.
During the year in excess of 1,500 young people from all schools across Glasgow benefited from some form of employer engagement. Feedback from young people, schools, Glasgow City Council and other agencies has been very positive. Similarly, feedback from an employees’ survey with a 68% response rate indicated that 93.9% of respondents enjoyed the experience and 91.2% said they would participate in similar activities (assuming it was agreed by their employer).
SBC would like to thank all the businesses and their employees who supported Commonwealth Apprenticeship Readiness Events.
