Family businesses are of key importance to the economy in Scotland

22 Aug 2008

If you own a business serving Scotland’s tourist trade, the chances are you will be a family business. A staggering 69% of Scottish businesses describe themselves as family businesses, with the proportion being even higher in tourism and in rural areas.

Family businesses are the lifeblood of the Scottish economy but despite that, there is very little tailored support out there for your distinct model of businesses.

In September 2005, the Scottish Family Business Association embarked on its mission to put in place the structures and resources necessary to ensure all family businesses in Scotland could access the specialist help, support and skills to enable them to grow and flourish over successive generations.

You may already need some support and advice on implementing best practice to help your family business flourish, or you may want the opportunity to network with other family business owners. Whatever the reason, we’d encourage you to register with us today. It’s free and will only take a few moments of your time.

  • 50% of the private sector workforce in Scotland is employed by family businesses, approximately 900,000 people
  • 45% of the UK’s GDP is produced by family enterprises
  • There are 60,000 Family Businesses in Scotland
  • Only 33% of family businesses make it to the second generation and 9% to the third
