School Teams Aim For Water Conservation

26 Nov 2007

School teams across Edinburgh, Midlothian, East Lothian and West Lothian will soon discover the details of their challenges in the Go4SET Water Conservation Project.

Six teams will represent Edinburgh in this national initiative which is part of the Engineering Development Trust’s suite of schemes.  Go4SET is aimed at stimulating the interest of young people in science, engineering and technology (SET) at a key stage in their education.

Each participating school will field a team of six 12 to 14 year olds working with their teacher and a company mentor.

The theme is water conservation and the exact details of the project will be announced at the launch event on Friday 9th November at Craighouse Campus, Napier University.  Teams will also meet their company mentor at the launch event.

All teams will work on the same project brief over a period of 10 weeks starting in November 2007 and the project phase involves a company visit show the pupils the relevance of the project in an industrial context.  The programme culminates in February 2008 with a Celebration & Assessment Day which provides an opportunity for pupils to display and demonstrate their individual projects to a group of assessors and guests attending the event.

Dr Aileen Lothian, Go4SET Regional Coordinator said, “This new go4SET programme, initiated by the Engineering Development Trust, provides educational establishments the opportunity of working with and being mentored by Scientists, Engineers and Technologists chosen from the complete spectrum of SET disciplines”.  The teams are keen to find out what their project will involve and with the skills and enthusiasm that abound in the region I am sure they will produce some excellent work.”
