RSBi hosts Scottish Business in the Community employability event

Representatives from Amey and City Building (Glasgow) LLP recently took part in an employability event organised by Scottish Business in the Community to provide career advice and support to over 80 pupils from six additional support for learning schools throughout Glasgow.

The event was held at Royal Strathclyde Blindcraft Industries (RSBi), Europe’s largest assisted factory facility, which is operated and managed by City Building (Glasgow) LLP and predominantly employs people who have a disability or who have learning difficulties. Business volunteers from both organisations took part to raise student’s awareness of potential jobs and training for people with learning disabilities within Amey and City Building. Each organisation showcased three job roles, providing an insight into the positions and hands on activities for the pupils.

Facilitated by Scottish Business in the Community, the employability event offered students, who have a range of learning disabilities, the opportunity to learn about the workplace and learn skills direct from business volunteers.

Gordon Wilson, service director at Amey said: “Amey has created over 2,000 jobs in Scotland in the last decade and we strive hard to deliver local training and create employment opportunities whenever possible, particularly for those furthest removed from the workplace. It was a pleasure to take part in SBC’s initiative and to meet and support the enthusiastic young people who attended.”

Amey (in Scotland) is Scottish Business in the Community’s Large Company of the Year and runs a number of employability schemes and initiatives aimed at young people and those from excluded groups.

Over the next 10 years in Amey’s highways, street lighting and winter maintenance partnership with North Lanarkshire Council will create almost 180 job opportunities including assisting 60 long-term unemployed individuals and 20 ex-offenders to find employment. Amey will also improve the skill set of over 500 people across North Lanarkshire through initiatives like second chance apprenticeships which target 18 to 24 year olds.

Scottish Business in the Community works with member organisations to build relationships with schools throughout Scotland. Increasing the capacity of Scotland’s young people to enter the workforce and continue to build the Scottish economy is a key priority for SBC.

Graham Paterson, City Building (Glasgow) LLP said: “We were delighted to host this event at RSBi, to demonstrate to the pupils, the possibilities that are available to them in terms of future employment. This event compliments RSBi’s Schools Vocational programme that has been running for the past 6 years.”
