HRH Prince Charles Duke of Rothesay and Scotland’s First Minister unite in support of sustainable business

Today (Wednesday 2 June 2010) HRH Prince Charles Duke of Rothesay and Scotland’s First Minister, Alex Salmond, joined together at The Palace of Holyrood to highlight the importance of sustainable business action for Scotland’s future economy.

Organised by Scottish Business in the Community (SBC), the Sustainable Scotland Summit united Scotland’s most influential businesses and decision makers to discuss solutions to the challenges and opportunities that Scotland faces as it moves towards a more sustainable future.

With a competitive global economy, public sector  and fiscal challenges and government legislation including the 42% carbon reduction Scotland must achieve by 2020, it’s paramount that private, public and non profit organisations work together.

First Minister Alex Salmond said:

“The Scottish Government’s Purpose to create a more successful and prosperous country through sustainable economic growth puts sustainability at the heart of everything we do.

“So far, more than 1,100 businesses in Scotland have recognised sustainability means future business success and have joined the Prince’s Mayday Network. Today’s event helps to showcase how companies can capitalise on the opportunities of the green economy.

“It is clear we have yet to scratch the surface of the potential of developing sustainable business and I welcome SBC’s work to encourage debate and discussion on this important issue.”

Scottish Business in the Community, one of The Prince’s Charities, helps businesses of all sizes to be more productive, innovative and competitive, while addressing social and environmental challenges.

Chief Executive of SBC, Jane Wood, stated: “Sustainable development is a key factor for the future of economic success in Scotland. Scottish Business in the Community’s Sustainable Scotland Summit allowed sector leaders to come together, address and respond to environmental and social issues that can lead to better business for a better Scotland.”

Prominent guest speakers from industry, government, environment and civic society informed attendees of the challenges that Scotland faces with examples of how they have progressed and captured opportunities in working towards a more sustainable environment, economy and society.

Speakers included Frank Blin - Executive Chairman, PricewaterhouseCoopers; John Swinney – MSP; Colin Hines – Convenor, New Green Deal Group and Sue Bruce - Chief Executive Aberdeen City Council, each providing an in-depth insight into the problems that Scotland faces and how we can all work together to find solutions for a better Scotland.

Following the summit the UK Awards for Excellence awards were presented by HRH Prince Charles Duke of Rothesay, celebrating businesses that have shown innovation, creativity and a sustained commitment to responsible and sustainable business practice.
