Law firm gets Glasgow school pupils ready for work

Staff from law firm Shepherd Wedderburn will get young people from Springburn Academy ready for work today Friday 5th of June as part of the UK’s biggest employee volunteering event.

Give and Gain Day on 5th June will see thousands of employees from across the UK give time and skills to schools and community groups as businesses face the impacts of recession. Give and Gain Day in Scotland is organised by the Prince’s charity Scottish Business in the Community. SBC helps businesses have a positive impact on their community.

Over thirty employees from the company will give their time and skills to school pupils across Scotland. A dozen staff from the Glasgow office of Shepherd Wedderburn will work with up to 12 pupils from S3 to get them ready for the world of work.

The young people will get a behind the scenes tour of the company and work through practical exercises with staff to give insights into what employers are looking for.

Patrick Andrews, Chief Executive of Shepherd and Wedderburn LLP said, "We're very excited to be involved in the Give and Gain Day. We have 12 students from Springburn Academy coming into our Glasgow office for a 'behind the scenes' tour. We hope to be able to give these students a flavour of office life to help prepare them for the job market once they leave school. It's important to us to be able to make a meaningful contribution to our local community and also give our staff the opportunity to engage in activities which are beyond their everyday role."

Norma Allison, Teacher and Employability Officer at Springburn Academy said, “This is a fantastic opportunity for the pupils to find out about employability. They need as much information as possible in today’s job market so this will help prepare them for the years ahead.”

Chief Executive of SBC Jane Wood said, “Give & Gain Day is about getting as many people out there to make a difference during work time. When times are hard, employee volunteering is the most cost-effective and valuable way for companies to continue to invest in their people’s time and skills – and to develop future talent and enterprise in the community.”
