Sainsbury's making healthy eating easier
28 Jan 2008
In the last year, Sainsbury's reformulated all of their own-brand products to make them as healthy as possible.
By January 2007, the store had removed all hydrogenated fats from all own-brand products in a process that took almost 2 years to complete. They have also reduced salt levels to meet the Food Standards Agency’s targets 3 years’ early on several categories.
Their ‘no nasties’ campaign aims to remove all unnecessary additives from our own-brand food and drink. In June they became the first retailer to remove all artificial colours and preservatives from their complete range of soft drinks.
Basics is their range of low price products and has been reformulated to offer the healthiest choices to customers on a budget. Since January, the range has been free from all hydrogenated fats, artificial colours and flavourings.
Clear, easy to understand labelling goes hand-in-hand with helping customers make healthy choices.
Multiple traffic light (MTL) labelling was recently voted easier to use than the alternative Guideline Daily Amounts approach by a majority of 7:3 at the National Obesity Forum.
Their MTL labelling is now on almost 5,000 products, providing clear information to help customers make healthy, informed choices at a glance.
MTL labelling is also helping drive their product reformulation programme. Product developers and technologists now aspire to include as many greens as possible on their labels.
