HALCROW MISTERS DID IT FOR THEMSELVES – AND RAISED THOUSANDS FOR CHARITY

A massive group of 27 runners from Glasgow-based engineering company Halcrow finished this year’s Men’s Health 10k Run at Bellahouston Park on Sunday on June 15, making their entry one of  the biggest ever in the history of the race.

With age ranges from 17 to 44 and with varying degrees of fitness – and optimism – the guys also raised over £3,000 for cancer research while getting fit at the same time.

The 10k run was organised by Men’s Health Forum Scotland and rounded off a week of events to raise awareness of men’s health issues throughout the country.

The Halcrow team saw Stuart Andrew outrun his colleagues when he came in 54th out of the 3,000 entrants, with an impressive time of 39 minutes. All the guys managed to cross the finish line, much to their delight.

Halcrow team organiser Charlie McFadden said: “Everyone was a wee bit apprehensive because for some people it was their first run, while there were other ‘seasoned professionals’ and it was a great achievement for everyone who took part.

“People approached their training in different ways, ranging from the more athletic running 12 miles a day, to the less motivated relying on their detailed knowledge of running theory to get them through it.”

According to Charlie the huge effort came about when “a leaflet was thrust upon one of my colleagues by his fair lady wanting a fitter man!”

His pal then asked if Charlie wanted to join in and the numbers snowballed from there.

Charlie said: “We decided to run for cancer research as cancer affects many of us, including myself when I lost an aunt last year so I’m delighted with what we raised.

“We’ve collected £3,000 so far but that’s with only half of the sponsorship collected, so who knows how much we’ll end up with. I’m really proud of what the guys achieved.”
