Glasgow's future scientists turn out for science fun day
07 Sept 2008
Hundreds of Glasgow’s budding young scientists gathered this weekend with their families at a special Family Science Day run by the Shell Education Service.
The Family Science Day, which is supported by staff from Shell Shared Services Ltd, Glasgow saw families from the company’s finance centre taking part in practical science investigations that featured electricity, energy transfer, forces and motion and materials.
Meg Post, one of the workshop leaders from the Shell Education Service, said: ”The inquisitive nature of children and the excitement generated when they are faced with investigating science was there for all to see. It is very important that primary school children’s interest in science continues into secondary education and beyond and we hope that by having fun this will happen.”
Alistair MacWilliam, General Manager at Shell's Financial Shared Service Centre in Glasgow stated: "The world needs more engineers and scientists to address the challenges we all face both now and in the future and encouraging an interest in science at an early age plays a big part in addressing that. Programmes like Shell Education Service exist to encourage children to take a greater interest in science."
He added, "The Family Science Day was extremely well supported by Shell's staff in Glasgow and I'd like to thank them for making the events such a huge success."
