Lothian firms rewarded for healthy staff

16 Jan 2008

EMPLOYERS in the Lothians were among the first in Scotland to pick up awards for promoting health and wellbeing in the workplace.
Among the 32 Scottish organisations rewarded were John Lewis, the Royal Bank of Scotland, Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service and East Lothian Council.

The Healthy Working Lives Award Programme was launched last year by the Scottish Centre for Healthy Working Lives.

All the employers have introduced steps to improve the lives of their staff, including exercise programmes, stop-smoking classes, health checks, massage visits and family-friendly policies.

Minister for public health Shona Robison made the presentation at a ceremony in Edinburgh yesterday.

She said: "The awards acknowledge organisations that recognise that looking after the health, safety and wellbeing of their employees is not only good for the individual but also contributes to reduced sickness absence, fewer workplace accidents, greater productivity and increased profitability."
