Spring into Action with Halcrow
23 May 2008
During May’s ‘Spring into Action’ week, Halcrow employees were encouraged to adopt sustainable transport methods such as walking, cycling and taking the bus or train, in a bid to reduce car use and encourage more environmentally friendly types of transport – and some enterprising staff in Inverness literally got their skates on and roller-skated to work to highlight the message!
During the week, breakfast was on offer to those who needed to replenish after their journey and, thanks to the Glasgow office recently adopting a Fair-trade policy, even the food reflected Halcrow’s commitment to corporate responsibility.
The Fair-trade move will help to contribute to Halcrow's sustainability agenda and purpose of sustaining and improving the quality of peoples’ lives.
June sees teams competing in the WaterAid challenge and the Scottish Men’s Health 10k Run.
Halcrow has sponsored the world-famous Buachaille Etiv Mor as part of WaterAid on June 7. The day will help raise funds for water projects in developing countries.
Teams from the Inverness and Glasgow offices will be donning their boots to climb the scenic Munro and it’s planned that 20 to 30 Halcrow hikers will be up for the task.
Likewise, a team of over 30 men from Halcrow’s Glasgow office will be taking part in the 10k For Men race at Bellahouston on June 15 in aid of Cancer Research.
Thought to be the biggest single team entry ever in the history of the race, guys from 17 to 44 will be wearing their corporate t-shirts with pride as they race round the Glasgow park.
Finally, away from physical activity, in May, Learning Teaching Scotland filmed pupils from St Stephen’s Primary School in Glasgow working with a Halcrow bridge engineer.
They designed and tested a model bridge as part of the company’s engagement with local schools and the piece will feature in the LTS website as a learning resource for other schools.
