Napier fundraiser gets helping hand from Harry Potter

01 April 2008

Items including a signed Harry Potter book will go under the hammer at a fundraiser taking place at Napier University’s Merchiston campus later this week.

The last instalment of the boy wizard's adventures, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, signed by Scots author JK Rowling, will be up for grabs a silent auction on April 4 to raise funds for the Clinic of Hope in Equatorial Guinea, which provides vital primary care.

Other attractions at the event, on April 4, will include complementary therapies, handcrafts, home baking, free face painting, and card-making for youngsters who want to send a card to a Malabo child.

Funds raised will be used to purchase much-needed medical equipment for the clinic, which will be taken to Malabo by former Napier student and qualified nurse Morag McMahon. She is currently saving up to cover the cost of her travel and living expenses out of her own pocket.

The clinic was set up by four partners out of their own personal funds and does not receive any government funding. Although it charges those who can afford to pay, it is committed to providing care to some of the poorest areas and offers its services free to those who do not have funds but are in desperate need of care.

Monica Gribben, Dyslexia Adviser, Napier University , said: “The Clinic of Hope deals with between 15 and 50 patients per day suffering from conditions including typhoid fever, malaria, HBP and diabetes, and it is desperately short of supplies for its patients. We want to give a helping hand are hoping this event will make a real difference to the clinic and its patients.

"Our fundraiser is already attracting a considerable amount of interest thanks to the book kindly donated by JK Rowling and I would like to thank her and everyone else who contributed donations in advance of the event."

The fundraiser takes place in room B40 of Napier's Merchiston campus on April 4 at 1pm, and the entry fee is £1.  Students and members of the public alike are welcome to attend.
