HUGE TURNOUT AS FIFE FAMILIES GATHER FOR SCIENCE FUN DAY

16 June 2008

Fife’s budding young scientists gathered with their families last weekend (14th June) at a special Family Day run by the Shell Education Service.  The event took place at St Colme House in Aberdour and was attended by over 1400 people.

The Family Day, which is supported by staff from the Shell Fife NGL Plant at Mossmorran, saw families taking part in practical science investigations that featured electricity, energy transfer, forces and motion and materials.

The St Colme House event marked the half way point of a fortnight of workshops across twenty seven of Fife’s primary schools, encouraging over two thousand children to explore and question science in a fun, hands-on way.  The workshops are designed to support the “Skills in Science – Investigating” aspect of the Scottish National Guidelines throughout P1-P7.

Anyone who missed the Family Day at St Colme House can visit the next one this weekend (21st of June) at Methilhill Primary School, Sea Road, Methilhill, Leven, from 11am to 4pm.  It will mark the end of a fortnight of science fun throughout Fife.

Meg Post, one of the workshop leaders from the Shell Education Service, said: ”The inquisitive nature of children and the excitement generated when they are faced with investigating science is there for all to see.  It is very important that interest continues into secondary education and beyond and we hope that fun they have at this age encourages that to happen.”

Alex Baird, Plant Installation Manager at Shell U.K. Limited’s Fife NGL Plant said: ‘In the first two weeks of June over two thousand primary school children across Fife will have had a lot of fun investigating and learning about science and that is really important.  The world needs more engineers and scientists to address the challenges we all face both now and in the future and encouraging an interest in science at an early age plays a big part in addressing that.  Programmes like Shell Education Service exist to support teachers and to encourage children to take a greater interest in science.”

Alex Baird added, “The Family Days in Fife are extremely well supported by the staff at Mossmorran and I’d like to thank them for making the events such a huge success.  Anyone who didn’t manage along to the event at St Colme House last weekend can attend the next one, this weekend, at Methilhill Primary School in Leven.”
