Tots Give Good Account in Bank-Backed Numbers Project

27 Sep 2007

An award winning numeracy project for pre-school children supported by Clydesdale Bank is being rolled out across South Lanarkshire libraries.

“Count Me In 1, 2, 3” has a series of activities for children aged between one and four years to encourage them to develop their skills with numbers.  It includes a range of bright and colourful bags - containing educational aids such as books, games and fun activities that can be borrowed from South Lanarkshire libraries by parents/carers, childminders and nurseries

Irene Swankie, Community Affairs Manager at Clydesdale Bank, said: “It is never too young for children to begin developing the kind of basic skills with numbers that will be vital as they grow older.  This initiative is a great way to stimulate young children to learn essential maths and will be a new resource for encouraging a child’s learning development.”

The launch event at Hamilton Town House Library was attended by children from the Early Learning Unit in Hamilton, representatives from Learning & Teaching Scotland, Scottish Business in the Community, Financial Education Partnership, and guests from other authorities across Scotland where the scheme is already up and running.

South Lanarkshire Council’s Chair of Education Councillor Mary Smith said: “Recent studies have shown that children who have been given books from an early age not only learn to read sooner at school but are also able to count at an earlier age because of the numbers that picture books and rhymes have.”
