Tesco Community Champions success in Scotland

26 Sep 2007

The Tesco store at Edinburgh Colinton is the first in Scotland to pilot a volunteering scheme. Staff will recieve grants to work with community groups such as charity shops, the Red Cross, the Guides and the Boys' Brigade.

Last month, Anne Williamson, Community Champion at the Colinton store, organised a charity fun day to launch the store's new community plan. She worked with over 20 local groups and businesses to put the day together and local Councillor Jason Rust opened the event.

Four key local charities attended and talked to customers about their work. Anne and her community group put on a healthy eating sampling table, score a goal, tombola, guess the cost of the shopping, an auction and a drawing competition. Local charities including the British Red Cross benefited from over £500 raised and despite the bad weather the Rotary Club collected over £1000 from the two days.

Following the success of the Community Champion scheme in Colinton, Tesco have now extended the trial to the Inverness Extra store.
