Oracle Academy urging businesses to get involved

18 May 2006

The Oracle Academy is designed to educate secondary students (ages 16 to 19) on the fundamentals of database and Java technology and provide them with the necessary skills to pursue academic and professional opportunities.

The programme is a one or multi-year commitment between Oracle, educational institutions, teachers and students alike. There are currently 55 schools or colleges participating in the Oracle Academy in the UK, including 20 schools whose bids for Specialist Schools status is supported by a £25,000 grant-in-kind from Oracle.

The Oracle Academy are looking for businesses to get involved in the final course project where students are asked to create a database application for a small business or department.  The students will interview the business, define their rules and need for information management and provide the business with a formal report and presentation based on their findings.

The database project provides a development and community engagement opportunity for the businesses and a realistic environment for the students to utilize tools, understanding and skills acquired in during the course. This is not a long-term commitment and it is likely that the students would require meeting with the business for a maximum of 3 hours over a one-week period.
