Climate of Change.
Welcome to October's edition of Scottish Business in the Community's e-Bulletin, our monthly newsletter for staff, member companies and partner organisations.
The title "Climate of Change" reflects an environmental theme across SBC this month.
At our October Working Lunch "Greener Shopping: Retail and Climate Change", a group of Scotland’s leading businesses met in Edinburgh to discuss the challenges faced by the retail sector in reducing their environmental impact. Companies attending the Working Lunch, hosted by SBC and Alliance Boots, heard from speakers including Richard Ellis of Alliance Boots, John Murray of the Energy Saving Trust and Ged Ward of First UK Bus. They were also asked to discuss the challenges, responsibilities and impact they have on the environment and share practical solutions to the issue. A full event report is available via the Events page of the e-Bulletin or by following this link to our website.
SBC is committed to encouraging our members to take a lead on managing their carbon footprint and, in a weeks time, we are holding the first May Day Business Summit on Climate Change at The Hub, Edinburgh. The Summit will bring together over 100 of the country’s top business leaders and will mark the beginning of a business-led movement for increased action on climate change. Companies attending will be asked to make firm commitments on what they will do to tackle their contributions to climate change. Those that are already working on and developing carbon reduction strategies will be encouraged to do more and share their knowledge. The event is now full to capacity and registration has closed, however, outcomes and results will be available via the 'May Day Company' section on our website following the Summit.
We can also look to our member companies for examples of leading the way in tackling climate change. In the News page this month you will find some interesting news articles from ScottishPower, Scottish and Southern Energy and Redeem, showing success and leadership in this area.
This month we welcome Blair Nimmo, Senior Partner at KPMG to our Guest Opinion slot. Blair's article is titled "Business is the elephant missing from the classroom in Scotland" and discusses how we need to empower our young people with the skills and knowledge that will allow them to flourish in today’s business climate.
We are always on the look out for contributions to our monthly e-Bulletin. The e-Bulletin is distributed to over 800 organisations throughout the UK and is an excellent opportunity for SBC and our Member companies to promote any Corporate Responsibility news or events. Please send over any items to carynrobertson@sbcscot.com for inclusion in next month's edition.
Until next month...
