Home Improvements!

Welcome to July’s edition of Scottish Business in the Community's e-Bulletin, our monthly newsletter for staff, member companies and partner organisations.

The e-Bulletin returns after a two month break – new and improved!

With a completely different look and feel, the e-Bulletin is one of the many areas in which SBC has undergone a complete refurbishment in recent months. Alex McBain, our Change Director and very own Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen, has been working tirelessly to revamp, refresh and rebuild everything from office furniture to a dynamic new website.

Small image of web siteNow the website will update regularly on all the latest in Corporate Responsibility and the positive work being undertaken by SBC and our member companies throughout Scotland. Further developments such as a member-only area to facilitate discussion and debate are already being planned for the future. The monthly e-Bulletin has been designed to compliment the new website and be informative and proactive, as well as a good read. We hope you agree that all the hard work on home improvements is starting to pay off!

ScottishPower LogoThis month we welcome Paul McKelvie, Corporate Responsibility Director at ScottishPower to our Guest Opinion slot. Paul gives his views on the subject Defining Corporate Responsibility – What is it and what is it not? You can read his thoughts in the Guest Opinion page of the e-Bulletin by clicking on the Guest Opinion tab at the top of this page. As our Large Company of the Year, ScottishPower has a solid reputation for their responsible approach to business, covering a total of twelve significant environmental and social impact areas. Most recently, the company has announced plans to contract Scottish farmers to produce 250,000 tonnes of energy crops in a bid to further reduce their carbon emissions. You will find this story and other ScottishPower news featured alongside Paul’s comments on the Guest Opinion page.

Despite it being peak holiday season at SBC, July has not been a quiet month with plenty going on across SBC. Our various programmes continue to run over the summer period and have been active in delivering an array of opportunities, volunteering & placements. Through the Employer Supported Volunteering Programme managed by James Tindell, a total of 20 Team Challenges were run over the period May to July. These involved 300 volunteers working to support 15 community based projects. A case study of James' latest ESV project is featured in the News page, along with the rest of the news from June and July across our programmes, network groups and member companies - Click on the News tab at the top of this page!

And there's no rest for the wicked - with the events calendar now filling up (See the Events page for details), the coming months look set to stay busy at SBC!

We hope you enjoy this first issue of the new SBC e-Bulletin and would be delighted if you have anything to contribute to future editions. Please browse through the rest of the newsletter by clicking on the tabs above.

Best Wishes,

The SBC Team

Sam's Scribblings

A message from our CEO, Samantha Barber.

Firstly I would like to welcome you to SBC's new monthly e-Bulletin. I hope you find it of interest and any feedback for the future would be greatly appreciated.

SBC is now seeing real positive changes through its recent re-structure. We are now well placed to rise to the challenge of growing SBC to benefit our membership and the individuals that are helped through our programmes. Our new management team will help drive the organisation forward by providing a stable platform with structured delivery of programmes and a calendar of CR related events specifically to meet our members needs.

CR Bites

Every month we will include a CR Bite from SBC Development Manager, Karen Davidson, to keep your Corporate Responsibility appetite going. This month Karen writes...

Corporate Responsibility is fast-paced. Even keeping up with what to call it has most of us flummoxed. Just when we think CSR is being supplanted by CR, Business Sustainability gets airplay, and some want to pinch the literal ‘responsible business practice’ from its SME home. Regardless of what you call it, Michael Hopkins in his book CSR and International Development, feels that there are six main issues in CR. You can view his argument here http://www.mhcinternational.com/articles/CSR%20Update.htm.

What do you think? If you have any comments on this month's CR Bite, please send them through to carynrobertson@sbcscot.com for inclusion in August's e-Bulletin.
