Welcome to our
From the Editor

Events, Events, Events!

Welcome to August's edition of Scottish Business in the Community's e-Bulletin, our monthly newsletter for staff, member companies and partner organisations.

August has seen lots going on across the programmes and network groups at SBC. As Sam mentions in her "Scribblings" slot, the events calendar is now filling up and is set to be very busy over the coming months.

August Working LunchAt the beginning of the month, we were pleased to welcome over 20 of our Member companies to the first in our new series of Working Lunches. Paul McKelvie (ScottishPower), Tyrone Jones (HBOS) and Sylvia Halkerston (Macphie of Glenbervie) spoke openly and passionately about their own experiences of embedding Corporate Responsibility into their companies’ business ethos and agendas before the floor was opened for a question and answer session and some interesting discussion flowed between the attendees. You can view a full event report on our website - click here.

As well as lots of hard work going in to organising our own calendar of upcoming events, the SBC Team have been taking part in some internal training this month. In a bid to raise awareness of religious diversity within the workplace and community so that SBC can “walk the talk” and challenge our members to do the same, we invited Naeem Raza, who runs the Glasgow-based consultancy Meem, to head a learning lunch for SBC staff about the subject. You can read more about this, and other events attended by SBC staff, on the events page of the e-Bulletin.

Following his participation at the Working Lunch, Tyrone Jones, Head of Corporate Responsibility at Bank of Scotland Corporate, was asked to HBOS logofeature in the Guest Opinion slot in this month's e-Bulletin. His article "Diversity and Inclusion" touches on how HBOS aims to achieve business excellence through valuing and respecting individual differences, and making the most of these. HBOS will be hosting a Working Lunch around this subject area in January - look out for more information being added to the SBC website soon!

Events aside, there has been some interesting stories coming out of our programmes, networks and Member companies this month. You can view a selection of our featured news by following this link to the news page.

Finally, SBC welcomed its newest recruit this month. Alistair Rankine joins the External Relations Team as an Account Relationship Manager, working alongside Claire Howe. Alistair has a background in Account Management and has worked extensively with Scottish-based private and public sector organisations. Most recently he has been working as a semi-professional photographer.

We are always on the look out for contributions to our monthly e-Bulletin. The e-Bulletin is distributed to over 800 organisations throughout the UK and is an excellent opportunity for SBC and our Member companies to promote any Corporate Responsibility news or events. Please send over any items to carynrobertson@sbcscot.com for inclusion in next month's edition.

In the meantime, Happy Reading!

The SBC Team

Sam's Scribblings

A message from our CEO, Samantha Barber.

It has been an exceptionally busy month at SBC. The External Relations Team are busy organising the May Day Business Summit on Climate Change which will take place at The Hub, Edinburgh on 7th November. Our Awards Workshops are now in the diary alongside our monthly Working Lunch series. The final event in our 25th Anniversary Celebration Year is an evening reception at Edinburgh Castle to be hosted by First Minister Alex Salmond. Our AGM is also in the diary for November.

So, there is a lot of activity out of the Edinburgh office but as you will see from elsewhere in this e-Bulletin, there is also a lot of work going on in our Glasgow office and across our network groups.

I would like to say welcome aboard for those companies who have recently joined membership of SBC. Claire Howe, Account Relationship Manager, will be in contact shortly to discuss how we can make membership of SBC work for you to the benefit of SBC and Scotland.

CR Bites

Football and CR - the role of Corporate Scotland

Karen Davidson, SBC Development Manager, attended the SURF [Scottish Urban Regeneration Forum] conference Football and Regeneration – Intangible Assets and Goodwill on 14 August and found some startling analogies with football, corporate Scotland and Corporate Responsibility. Lex Gold, Chair of the Scottish Premier League said “Clubs can be a catalyst for good and derive value from this activity, it is enlightened self interest to get involved, it is good business.” Sound familiar? Read more in Karen's full event report here.
