Employability and Scotland.

Welcome to September's edition of Scottish Business in the Community's e-Bulletin, our monthly newsletter for staff, member companies and partner organisations.

The title "Employability and Scotland" reflects a theme of employabiliy and, in particular, youth employability across SBC this month.

At the beginning of the month (10th September) SBC welcomed the publication of "Skills for Scotland, A Lifelong Skills Strategy" by the Scottish Government. We are encouraged by employability being given more emphasis by the new Government and are committed to our goal of bringing together the private, public and voluntary sectors to improve employability and the long term economic sustainability of Scotland. You can read our comments on the Strategy on the e-Bulletin News page.

Emma Huthison collecting prizeFour days prior to the release of the Skills Strategy, SBC held an evening reception at Glasgow Science Centre to celebrate its "Closing the Gap" employability programme and the positive impact companies in Glasgow have made to the 'no positive destination' figures for particpating schools over the past four years. A full event report, with more information, is included on the Events page of the e-Bulletin. Closing the Gap has proved so successful that steps are now being taken to roll the programme out to other parts of Scotland and on the 13th of this month business leaders and school representatives met in Dundee to launch a pilot of the Closing the Gap model in their city.

Staying with the theme of employability, this month we welcome Jane Richardson of member company Oracle to our Guest Opinion slot. Her article discusses the topic of "Youth Employability" and the importance on developing the skills of the future Scottish workforce. Oracle will be hosting working lunch on this subject in February 2008, look out for more information in future e-Bulletins!

Don't miss the details of all upcoming SBC events on the Events page of the e-Bulletin and make sure you browse through all the news from this month across our programmes and network groups by visiting the News page.

We are always on the look out for contributions to our monthly e-Bulletin. The e-Bulletin is distributed to over 800 organisations throughout the UK and is an excellent opportunity for SBC and our Member companies to promote any Corporate Responsibility news or events. Please send over any items to carynrobertson@sbcscot.com for inclusion in next month's edition.

Until next month...

Sam's Scribblings

A message from our Chief Executive, Samantha Barber...

Third Sector magazine recently asked me to comment on the question "Should charities be accepting money from big corporations?"

Scottish Business in the Community is a member led business organisation, made up of leading companies determined to make a positive impact on society. They do this by developing a corporate responsibility framework - a way of doing business better - which enables wealth creation, and considers society and the environment as major stakeholders. Charities are an integral part of this. So the question, from the business point of view is "should companies be giving money to charity?" The answer is yes - if it is part of their corporate responsibility strategy. Corporate giving can form part of this strategy and it benefits business to have an established framework through which staff can fundraise and the amount is matched by the business. This develops relationships which help the business gain a deeper understanding of scoiety and a closer engagement with charity. A well integrated charity partnership driven by Corporate Responsibility, will give the private sector a stronger and more responsible role to play.
