'White Light Media' help Broughton students become creative

Broughton High Students in discussion with teacher Rob Windever and Alan Lennon, Creative Director White Light Media.

Broughton students are fast becoming creative as they update a new look school magazine inspired and mentored by successful local contract publishing agency, White Light Media. And behind this project lies a story of partnership working at its best.

It all kicked off when Inverleith Partnership Development Officer, Elaine Lennon, introduced her husband Alan of White Light Media to SBC North Edinburgh, knowing he wanted to raise his company’s positive impact on the community. Never one to miss out on an opportunity Hazel McDonald Business Development Manager for SBC North Edinburgh quickly matched Alan and his talented team to Broughton High School to help them revamp their school magazine.

Alan Lennon, Creative Director, of White Light Media explained, “It really is great to help in this project and most apt as my daughter was a former pupil of Broughton. I thought that to start the ball rolling Broughton should enter the 2008 Scottish School Magazine Competition, as this would be an exciting opportunity to showcase and develop the student’s creative skills by writing, designing and producing a magazine. Obviously being a competition I could only facilitate, guide and mentor but it really has given me a lot of pleasure working with such talented young people.”

Rob Windever, English teacher at Broughton High said “This is a new challenge for me and my pupils as we have never produced a school magazine before. The aim is to create a product that is both saleable and cost effective and White Light Media have been invaluable with their advice. The pupils have gained from this experience enormously and their new found skills will most certainly be of benefit to the school in the long term.”
