Exercise through play at Molly's in North Edinburgh
12 Feb 2008
Molly’s Play Scheme at Ocean Terminal in Leith is taking its social responsibility very seriously and is trail blazing a superb free offer of exercise through play to help fight childhood obesity.
Lorraine Politi of Molly’s explained, “Molly’s was developed to allow children to exercise through play in a safe and secure environment whilst maximising their opportunity for social interaction. Molly's has been supported by Scottish Business in the Community(SBC) North Edinburgh and, as such, really believe in giving something back to the community.
With the increasing problem of childhood obesity, and the financial constraints within education making out of school activities an exception, not the norm, it is important that where possible, businesses who have the resources step in to help out.
And two local groups, who have recently taken up the offer to experience this unique form of exercise, are the Buggy Brigade and The Prentice Centre, After Schools Club. Both have trialled the Play Centre facilities and had a really fantastic experience. The Buggy Brigade started the day with an energetic bang and used the soft play area which is suitable for nursery and early year schoolchildren. Sarah Low Community Learning and Development Worker with the Buggy Brigade said, “The play session day was brilliant and both mothers and children enjoyed the fun enormously.”
And the After Schools Club who have outgrown the world of soft play experienced a frantic fun activity with a Laser Storm Session where they clambered around a darkened down play area using laser lights as target.
Annette McEwan Children’s Worker for the After Schools Club said, “The children just loved the laser storm activity and this was obvious from their comments. Jennifer said it was fabidosy and she loved shooting the laser guns. Amy said that it was very good and fun. Jay liked it because the laser went a long distance. Cameron particularly liked going into the tree house. And finally Ellis thought that it was fun shooting the lights to get points.”
