A Sporting Chance: Grampian Community Sports Challenge Begins
30 Aug 2007
The SBC Community Sports Challenge for 2007 begins next week – Monday 3rd September.
The Challenge includes training and mini competitions in touch rugby, golf, rock climbing, football and basketball. Now in its third year, it is designed to help tackle the provision of ‘diversionary activities’ for young people in the deprived areas of Aberdeen – particularly on a Friday night (the worst night in the City for anti social behaviour).
Having now built a solid reputation amongst Aberdeen communities, kids are now coming back year after year to participate. This year, there are six community groups participating - Kairnhill, Garthdee, Northfield, Middlefield, Fersands and Torry.
Fiona Beattie, Community Worker at Fersands and Fountain Community Project explained what the Challenge means to the kids who take part in Fersands – one of the areas targeted for regeneration in Aberdeen.
She said “As well as getting them involved in sports that they would not otherwise have the opportunity to take part in, the Challenge gets the kids out of their own environments for a while – to meet new people and experience new things. It brings out the best in them.”
The Challenge runs until October when finals in all sports are held.
Well done to the unsung heroes of SBC Grampian, Bill Ferguson and Alex Gauld, for all their hard work in organising this outstanding event.
