Modern Language Carousel
28 Nov 2007
In response to a request for help from Hillhead High School regarding a fall in the number of pupils choosing to continue with their Modern Language studies, Closing the Gap arranged a Modern Language Carousel. One hundred and sixty S3 pupils attended the event, which included a fantastic presentation from Tim Stewart of Language Network Scotland. Tim shared some of his personal experiences of dealing with customers from Japan for a number of years (Tim is fluent in Japanese) and showed the pupils what a difference having a second or third language could make to their employability and also future earning potential.
The pupils were then given time with representatives from Live Language, Lloyds TSB, Visit Scotland, Immigration Advisory Service, University of Strathclyde – Modern Language Department, Glasgow Metropolitan college – ESOL Unit and Chardon Management. Each company made a short presentation to the pupils and then held a question and answer session. The afternoon was a great success with the following feedback received from the pupils who took part:-
