Asian bosses ready to battle for honours

27 Nov 2007

ONE of the UK's biggest ethnic business competitions takes place on Thursday - with Glasgow hoping for a repeat performance of last year.

The Crowne Plaza hotel plays host to the Eastern Eye Scotland's Scottish Asian Business Awards on Thursday night and a host of celebrities and MSPs are lined up to take part.

Deputy First Minster Nicola Sturgeon and Labour leader Wendy Alexander will present awards, as will Ghazal Asif from The Apprentice.

The hosts will be Shereen Nanjiani and actor Atta Yaqub, with the Evening Times the event's media partner. The awards have become one of Scotland's major business competitions and last year hundreds flocked to the finals which were dominated by Glasgow entrepreneurs.

Many of the city's top business people picked up the main awards.

Top honour last year went to restaurateur Satty Singh, who was named Entrepreneur of the Year.

Satty was awarded for his success with his Mearns Golf Academy venture as well as his involvement in world events. Other winners on the night included human rights lawyer Aamer Anwar, fast-food magnates Wahid and Shahid Sadiq as well as teenage care home developer Arti Poddar.

Fozia Ali, campaign manager for the Scottish Asian Business Awards 2007, said: "As the awards draw nearer the excitement in our office is building.

"The second annual Scottish Asian Business Awards are undoubtedly set to exceed the exceptional nature of the inaugural awards last year.

"The continual support from all facets of the Scottish community and the increasing interest in Scotland's achievements after Glasgow's Commonwealth Games bid, will most definitely guarantee global recognition."

This year, there is a total of seven awards up for grabs. They are the Young Achiever of the Year, sponsored by City Building, Newcomer of the Year, sponsored by Hunter and Hunter, the Community Award, sponsored by Eastern Eye Scotland.

Businessman of the Year, is being sponsored by DAMAC Properties, Businesswoman of the Year, is sponsored by Michael Page International, Life Time Achievement, is sponsored by Glasgow City Council and the Entrepreneur of the Year is sponsored by KPMG.
